Last weekend, tragedy struck at Cosmila Hotel in Awka, Anambra State, as Miss Chinyere Awuda, a young woman from Nnobi in Idemmili South Local Government Area, lost her life in a heart-wrenching incident. Allegedly, a group of fun-seekers at the hotel’s club beat her to death.
The trouble began when a well-known club-goer named Mr. Gabriel Chinemere and his companions started assaulting Chinyere. Despite attempts by others to intervene and help her, the relentless beating and harassment continued.
According to sources, the altercation erupted when one of the clubbers accused Chinyere of picking up money that was being sprayed on their friend, who was celebrating their birthday. Others claimed that she not only picked up money but also went for bundles of money that a clubber had placed by his seat, intending to spray it on the birthday celebrant.
The situation escalated, leading to the assailants dragging Chinyere outside the club and callously disposing of her lifeless body in the hotel’s swimming pool.
An anonymous regular clubber at Cosmila Hotel mentioned that some girls come dressed up to the club and discreetly pocket money while men are busy with the celebrations. The alleged incident involving Chinyere was said to be linked to this behavior.
Anambra State Police Spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and revealed that the birthday celebrant and his friends had been taken into police custody for questioning as the investigation into the case continues. He also stated that the management of Cosmila Hotel had cooperated with the police during the investigation, dismissing any claims of their complicity.
