UNICAL's Thorough Investigation into Allegations of Sexual Harassment Against Lecturer

The University of Calabar’s administration has initiated an official investigation in response to allegations of sexual harassment involving Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the Dean of the Faculty of Law. The allegations surfaced on Monday when students from the university shared a viral video on social media, accusing Ndifon of engaging in sexual assault and harassment.

The students took a bold step by collectively rallying at the office of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi. Their peaceful protest was marked by placards adorned with powerful messages such as “Ndifon must go for our sanity,” “We are tired of buying law journals,” “We are tired of lecturers not attending classes,” and “Law girls are not your bonanza; Prof. Ndifon should stop grabbing us and others.”

However, Prof. Ndifon has vehemently denied the allegations. In a statement reported by online media outlet CrossRiverWatch, he refuted the claims and attributed the protest to individuals within the faculty who he believes hold personal grudges against him. He expressed frustration over the accusations, asserting that he does not teach the specific year groups mentioned and that the allegations are baseless attempts to tarnish his reputation.

Eyo Bassey, the spokesperson for the university, communicated that the university’s management held discussions with the concerned parties in light of the protest. Bassey mentioned that the university was in the process of issuing an official statement addressing the matter. He revealed that the students’ grievances extended beyond sexual harassment and encompassed a variety of concerns, indicating a broader issue at hand.

The meeting between the university management and the students from the Faculty of Law was described as a platform for open dialogue. The students were applauded for bringing attention to the issues they had raised, and the university management expressed its commitment to addressing these matters effectively.
As the investigation unfolds, the University of Calabar is faced with the task of ensuring a fair and thorough examination of the allegations. This incident sheds light on the importance of addressing harassment in educational institutions and fostering an environment where students can voice their concerns without fear of retaliation.
