Speaker Assures Nigerians Of Survival Package In Pursuit Of Minimum Wage

Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has assured the public that lawmakers are dedicated to ensuring that Nigerians receive a survival wage in the ongoing review of the minimum wage. This commitment was made during the National Policy Dialogue on Corruption, Social Norms, and Behavior Change in Nigeria, which took place in Abuja.

Represented by Busayo Oluwole-Oke, the representative of Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Abbas pledged his support to the Independent Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in its anti-corruption efforts. He stressed the importance of addressing factors that contribute to corrupt behaviors while advocating for a survival wage system.

Abbas acknowledged that a survival wage is essential to combating corruption effectively. He emphasized that a situation where a significant portion of the population’s earnings cannot cover basic needs creates an environment conducive to corruption.

He highlighted the House of Representatives’ keen interest in the ongoing review of the minimum wage, stating that this time, the House is dedicated to ensuring that Nigerians receive a survival wage that can support their livelihoods.

The Speaker underlined the importance of changing social norms and behaviors to combat corruption. He noted that while advocating for attitude and behavior changes is crucial, it’s equally important to address the circumstances that drive these behaviors. He advocated for multi-faceted approaches, including awareness campaigns, education programs, value reorientation, community engagement initiatives, and legal reforms.

Abbas stressed the need for a comprehensive government policy that addresses living wages for citizens and bridges the gap created by governance failures. He indicated that curbing corruption requires a combination of efforts, including transparency, accountability, legal frameworks, and ethical leadership.

In alignment with the Speaker’s perspective, the President of the Senate, represented by Dr. Saviour Enyiekere, Deputy Chief of Staff, emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach to combat corruption. He highlighted the importance of enforcing comprehensive anti-corruption laws, promoting ethical behaviors through education, and fostering an engaged civil society that can hold governments accountable.

Overall, the Speaker and Senate President’s addresses emphasized the significance of tackling corruption through a combination of measures, including providing a survival wage, promoting ethical behaviors, and strengthening anti-corruption legal frameworks.
