Earlier in 2022, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer was charged with tax evasion for allegedly failing to pay 14.5 million euros in taxes between 2012 and 2014. If found guilty, the 46-year-old could face imprisonment in Spain. However, Shakira has consistently denied the allegations, stating in an interview with ELLE that she was not a resident of Spain during the mentioned period.
Despite her upcoming trial in November, a new tax probe has been initiated against the renowned superstar. A court in the northeastern Spanish town of Esplugues de Llobregat has granted prosecutors permission to investigate two potential cases of tax fraud by Shakira from 2018.
In response to the reports, Shakira’s legal team clarified that they have not received any formal notification of the new investigation. They stated that the singer is currently based in Miami and will need to be personally notified at her new address.
Shakira’s legal team also emphasized that she has always acted within the boundaries of the law and under the guidance of top tax experts. The singer is focusing on her artistic pursuits in Miami and remains calm and confident that her tax affairs will be resolved favorably.
Shakira moved from Barcelona to Miami with her children in April 2023, following her breakup with ex-boyfriend and FC Barcelona player, Gerard Pique.
