President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa. The suspension was announced in a statement by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
The statement said that Bawa was suspended “to allow for a proper investigation into his conduct while in office.” Malami did not provide any further details about the allegations against Bawa.

Bawa was appointed EFCC chairman in February 2022. He was the youngest person to ever hold the position. Bawa is a trained accountant and has worked in the anti-corruption sector for over 15 years.
His suspension has been met with mixed reactions. Some people have welcomed the move, saying that it is necessary to ensure that the EFCC is free from corruption. Others have criticized the move, saying that it is an attempt to undermine the fight against corruption.
