The Apapa-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Lamidi Apapa, extends its warm wishes to Peter Obi, the party’s flag bearer, on his 62nd birthday. However, the NWC expresses regret for choosing him as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election.
According to the faction, Peter Obi failed to represent the diverse interests within the party and instead favored the interests of a specific faction. The NWC urges him to use this occasion to reflect on becoming a statesman who considers the broader national interest rather than being perceived as a regional partisan.
The NWC acknowledges his popularity among the people, which is attributed to his association with the Labour Party and his representation of the people. However, they also point out concerns about recent actions that undermined the party’s discipline.
One particular issue mentioned is his appearance at the Presidential Electoral Tribunal as a non-member of the Labour Party and his alleged false statements regarding the submission of documents. The NWC is disturbed that he relied on a “non party agent” to defend his case, questioning the integrity of such actions.
Despite the birthday wishes, the NWC openly states their regret for fielding Peter Obi as the party’s presidential candidate and asserts that they will not make the same mistake in the future. They hope that this birthday milestone will prompt him to become a better Nigerian and move beyond ethnic biases.
