Kano, Oyo, Kwara, and Osun states’ governments have declared a work-free day on Wednesday to celebrate the commencement of the Islamic New Year, 1445 (Hijrah). In Kano State, Governor Abba Yusuf encouraged residents to pray for peace and economic development. Similarly, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde congratulated Muslim faithful and urged them to pray for the peace and unity of the state and Nigeria.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke also declared a work-free day for residents and will preside over a special march past in Osogbo to mark the occasion. In Kwara State, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq approved the day to be observed annually as a work-free day.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN) renewed its call for the Federal and state governments to declare the first day of Muharram, the Islamic New Year, as a public holiday, in consideration of millions of Muslims in Nigeria. The MMPN emphasized that such a declaration would align with the rule of law, fairness, and justice.
