The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has issued a warning against the ill-treatment of Nigerians abroad. He emphasized that Nigerian athletes living outside the country must be treated with respect and dignity.
This statement was made in response to a viral video from Napoli’s TikTok account, where Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen, was mocked for missing a penalty kick in a match against Bologna. The minister, through his media aide Alkasim Abdulkadir, emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding the life and dignity of every Nigerian in the Diaspora, in line with the principles outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
He stressed the importance of recognizing the equality and dignity of all human beings, as stated in Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The minister criticized Napoli for not adhering to this principle, particularly in their mocking of Victor Osimhen, a key player in the team’s Serie A championship win last season.
Abdulkadir highlighted that the Federal Government and Nigerian embassies would closely monitor the treatment of not only sportsmen and women in Napoli but also all other citizens in the Diaspora. Any instances of maltreatment would be promptly addressed and remedied.
