Navy Won’t Stop Burning Vessels Ferrying Stolen Crude – Flag Officer

Rear Admiral Umar Chugali, the Flag Officer Commanding Central Naval Command, asserted that the Nigerian Navy will persist in burning vessels caught with stolen crude oil as part of their standard operating procedure. He made this declaration during a familiarisation tour of naval units at the Navy Base in Warri, Delta State.

In recent news, the military set ablaze a vessel, MT TURA II, destined for Cameroon, carrying 150 metric tonnes of stolen crude oil on July 11. This action raised concerns among Nigerians, including the House of Representatives.

Addressing journalists during the tour, Rear Admiral Chugali stated that the burning of intercepted vessels is the immediate response to combat illegal activities in the maritime domain. He emphasized that this approach has been effective so far and is being followed by all naval personnel and units as per the standard operating procedure and existing regulations. He also mentioned the possibility of reviewing this practice in the future.
