NAAT Strongly Opposes The 200% Increase In Fees Implemented By Federal Universities.

The recent 200% fee hike in federal universities has raised concerns among the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), as it may result in students discontinuing their education.

NAAT has also voiced its opposition to the dissolution of Universities Governing Boards and called on the Federal Government to reinstate these dissolved boards.

These issues were addressed in a statement released by NAAT President, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, following the conclusion of the association’s 52nd National Executive Council meeting. The statement was made available to journalists in Abuja on Sunday.

Expressing discontentment with the recent increase in tuition fees at higher education institutions, particularly universities, NAAT stated, “We are deeply concerned about the recent escalation in fees and charges at our Federal Institutions.”

The current economic challenges faced by parents and the lack of sufficient resources to cope with financial demands may force many students to abandon their education. This predicament arises from the recent 200% increase in fees and charges imposed by university authorities.

In light of these circumstances, NAAT appeals to the government to consider the plight of the underprivileged and reverse the decision, returning to the previous fee structure until the loan issue is effectively addressed.

The association further expresses concern that the dissolution of university governing boards poses a setback to the progress and advancement of tertiary education in Nigeria. It argues that this dissolution will hinder the operations of the country’s higher education institutions, particularly in the areas of promotions, incentives, welfare, contracts, project documentation, as well as practical and research laboratory facilities.
