A man named Godwin Bassey has allegedly fled with a Toyota Corolla car worth N5 million in Lagos State.
The vehicle belongs to Amuta Friday, residing in the Ejigbo area of the state.
The 27-year-old mechanic was subsequently arrested and brought before the Lagos State Police Command.
He appeared before Magistrate Patrick Nwaka at a Magistrates’ Court session in the Yaba area of the state, standing in for Magistrate Balogun.
The prosecutor, Chekwube Okeh, informed the court that the defendant committed the offense in March 2023 in the Ejigbo area of the state.
Okeh stated that on March 9, 2023, Friday hired Bassey to repaint his Corolla car and paid him N32,000 for the job, which was expected to be completed in three days as per their agreement.
However, Bassey left with the car that same day and could not be reached despite several attempts until his subsequent arrest.
The charges brought against Bassey included stealing, as outlined in Sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.
In response, Bassey pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Nwaka granted him bail in the amount of N1 million, requiring two responsible sureties of equal sum.
The case was adjourned until July 13, 2023, for mention.
