INEC to Tribunal: Obi's Claims of Election Irregularities False, Tinubu Duly Elected by Nigerians

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has filed a reply at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), asking for the dismissal of the petition by the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi. INEC stated that the relief sought by the petitioners was not grantable and the petition was incompetent, abusive, and hypothetical.

The LP and Obi sued INEC, Sen. Bola Tinubu, Sen. Kashim Shettima, and All Progressives Congress (APC) as respondents, seeking the nullification of Tinubu and Shettima’s victory in the presidential election held on Feb 25. Tinubu emerged as the winner of the election with 8,794,726 votes, while Obi came third with 6,101,533 votes.

INEC argued that both Tinubu and Shettima were duly nominated and sponsored to contest the election and fulfilled the requirements of the constitution to be declared winners and issued Certificates of Return. The case continues to be heard at the PEPC, where the fate of the petitioners’ claims will be determined.
