On Monday, a section of Ife Grand Resort located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, and owned by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, was engulfed by fire.

Thankfully, no human casualties were reported, but unfortunately, an unspecified number of crocodiles housed in the resort’s lake were electrocuted due to an electric cable falling into the water.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, but Ibrahim Adekunle, the spokesperson for the Osun State Fire Service, confirmed the incident.

According to Adekunle, the fire department received an emergency call from the resort around 6:52 pm, and firemen promptly responded to the scene. After hours of diligent efforts, the fire was eventually brought under control, and no lives were lost.

On Tuesday, when contacted for an update on the situation, Adekunle stated, “On Monday, 24th July 2023, at exactly 6:53 pm, we received an alert from Mr. Samuel, one of the staff members at Ife Resort, regarding a fire incident near their crocodile sanctuary.”

He further explained that the fire brigade from Ile-Ife zonal Fire Headquarters of the Osun State Fire Service, along with the Fire Department of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, swiftly responded to the scene. Working together, they managed to extinguish the fire and safeguard nearby structures.

Tragically, a few crocodiles were electrocuted as a result of the incident, while efforts were made to rescue the others.
