A woman named Adaeze Lawrence, aged 28 is currently under the custody of the Abia State Police Command on suspicion of stealing a baby boy aged one month and two days from her friend. Adaeze Lawrence established a friendship with the baby’s mother, Onyinyechi Owujie, before committing the alleged crime.
The suspect, who works as a hair stylist, was acquainted with Owujie’s elder sister through their school days, which facilitated her access to Owujie’s residence. During a celebration apparently organized for the baby’s birth, the suspect reportedly seized the opportunity and absconded with the infant.
Following the incident, the matter was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of the suspect at her hideout. The Abia State Police Special Weapons and Tactics Team apprehended Adaeze Lawrence on August 14, 2023, based on credible intelligence.

According to the statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Chioma Chinaka, the accused was found in possession of the one-month-old baby boy. Adaeze Lawrence initially denied the allegations, claiming that the baby was her own. However, after a medical examination disproved her claim and confirmed that she was not the biological mother, she eventually confessed to the abduction.
Investigations revealed that the suspect and the baby’s mother’s elder sister were schoolmates, which she used to gain the mother’s trust. Under the guise of celebrating the baby’s birth, the suspect orchestrated the abduction during their outing.
ASP Chioma Chinaka advised the public to maintain vigilant supervision of their children, especially in public spaces, and to exercise caution when unfamiliar individuals take an interest in their children.
As of now, the investigation into the case is ongoing.
