A Thief Attempting To Steal An Underground Armoured Cable At Lagos Airport Was Apprehended

Shortly after suffering the loss of almost all its lighting cables in the international wing of Murtala Muhammed Airport, another cable thief was caught in the act, raising concerns for airport authorities.

Vigilant guards at the Nigeria Air Force headquarters gate managed to apprehend one of the three culprits who were attempting to dig up the underground armored cable at the airport. Unfortunately, the other two thieves escaped, leaving behind suspicion and worry.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the incident through its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua.

According to him, the guards on duty spotted the thieves at about 01:35hrs on July 21, 2023, and upon seeing the guards, the culprits fled. However, one of them, Usman Musa, a 28-year-old native of Adamawa State residing in Ijora, sustained gunshot wounds and was subsequently arrested. He is currently receiving treatment at General Hospital Oyingbo and will be interrogated after stabilizing.

FAAN believes that this latest incident could be a significant clue in resolving the earlier theft of the Runway Lighting at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The previous theft led to the suspension of 10 senior officials in various relevant departments of FAAN, and a committee was set up by the permanent secretary at the Ministry of aviation, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, to investigate the matter.
